Psychotherapy

“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.”
- Carl Jung

Psychotherapy can take many different forms and assist with a variety of problems. My first priority is to see what you bring and what mode of working will best suit who you are. Usually this consists of an informal yet detailed interview in order to get a sense of who you are and of your context. This also allows both the therapist and the patient (or the group) to gauge their suitability for each other. Other assessments may be conducted if we find it necessary.

I work in an insight-oriented way, where the therapeutic space is used towards gaining an understanding of your internal world and how it impacts your day-to-day life and functioning. This means that although the aim is to alleviate the symptom/s that brings you to therapy, understanding the meaning of the symptom is where the process of psychotherapy is focused and healing takes place. If this way of working is not indicated for your concern, other interventions such as psychoeducation and/or or focusing on behaviour change by means of the here-and-now might be considered.

Sessions are conducted in English or Afrikaans, and I work comfortably across different cultural, subcultural and religious groups.

The psychotherapy I offer can assist with various difficulties, including:
- Depression and anxiety
- Support for patients with psychotic symptoms
- Personality disorders
- Personal growth
- Bereavement
- Support during terminal or chronic illness
- HIV/AIDS counselling and support
- Relationship difficulties, such as in intimate relationships, parent-child relationships, professional relationships, peers
- Emotional difficulties during the antenatal period
- Preparing for and processing birth
- LGBTQ+ challenges
- Addiction support
- Trauma
- Adjustments and life transitions

I have training and experience across the lifespan and population groups:
- Play and/or talking therapy for children and adolescents
- Art/ expressive arts therapy for adolescents and adults
- Talking insight-oriented therapy for adolescents and adults
- I work comfortably across different cultural, subcultural and religious groups
